Chicken Feet Necklace from David&Martin

The Mystical Chicken Feet

Humans have a long tradition of wearing jewellery to represent their faith and culture, or as amulets for luck and love. Symbolic jewellery helps us express our beliefs and gives a sense of protection. Contemporary jewellery with a meaning is in a league of its own, not just complementing your unique style, but also serving an extra purpose, often hidden from others and only known to you.
David&Martin has just the product to illustrate jewellery with a story and meaning. It certainly has a potential to become your little shiny secret! As our iconic Chicken Feet collection nears two decades, we couldn't be prouder of its legacy. It is not just gorgeous – classy and edgy; it is also highly meaningful and, as it turns out, mystical.
Unsurprisingly, the Chicken Feet collection was creatively conceived by David&Martin designers during their travel to China, where chicken feet have special meaning and where eating them is common. The idea of the collection was born after the untamed designers’ imagination was caught by the sighting of a beautiful girl on a Shanghai subway as she was munching deep-fried chicken feet while graciously flicking through French Vogue. The combination of stunning Asian beauty, the true spirit of fashion and the unsuspecting situation started a powerful creative wave that could not be contained. Upon returning to Sweden from their trip to China, David&Martin designers got to work on a mission to create a truly unique, bold piece of jewellery. The mould for the collection was made from the real chicken feet sourced from a farm outside Stockholm, for the jewellery to look as realistic and close to nature as possible. The result was genius and genuine simplicity. It isn't surprising Chicken Feet jewellery collection took the world by storm and inspired a new generation of designers to repeat the success.

The concept of eating chicken feet is rather foreign here in the West. While we might think that chicken feet are a strange thing to eat, people in China say: "They good for the skin!". This is true. Chicken feet are full of natural collagen that our bodies need so much. In the West, we take collagen supplements to enhance our skin tone as we age, while in China the usual diet is rich in different fatty foods that we would snicker at back home. But before we start googling "buy chicken feet", let’s find out what chicken feet actually taste like. It is shocking to anyone new to the chicken feet eating business at first, as the texture and the look may make your skin crawl, especially when you see the fingers on the feet flex as you bite into the tendons. It doesn’t take long to find out that chicken feet in fact taste like most other parts of the chicken but are fattier and stringier in texture. Would you consider eating them for morning tea to accompany your dim sum? Anyone?

In wise Chinese culture, the chicken forms part of the symbolism of the dragon and phoenix. At a Chinese wedding, chicken feet, referred to as phoenix feet, are often served with dragon foods such as lobster. Chicken is also popular at Chinese New Year, symbolizing a good marriage and the coming together of families, and serving the bird whole emphasizes family unity.
Chicken Feet jewellery is a truly iconic design: the Eastern and the Western aesthetics coming together.

For centuries, Chicken Feet have been used as a protection charm against evil in certain religious practices such as Voodoo. Its symbolics is magical. Voodoo is an Afro-Caribbean religion that originated in Haiti with followers found in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Brazil, the United States and elsewhere, and ironically David&Martin designers named Voodoo as one of the original inspirations at the foundation of the brand. Dried Chicken Feet are used in the practice of Voodoo, as well as other magical traditions, for protection and for enemy work. The feet are seen as a powerful protection against evildoers and are believed to work by magically "scratching" the enemy. Many practitioners will use a chicken foot as part of an anti-theft spell; it is usually hung in the open, from a rear-view mirror or above a door. Used this way, the foot represents the threat of magical retaliation.
In a nutshell, a chicken foot is a non-verbal means of communication by which a warning is sent to any would-be-thief: stay away, or the magic will harm you. One chicken foot with green and red ribbon bindings tied to it, is also usually sent as a warning not to talk, or else evil will come your way.
