Four ways to keep your silver jewellery clean

Four ways to keep your silver jewellery clean

Your silver jewellery is affected by multiple factors such as humidity, quality of air, sweat, and skincare which can oxidise it and make it lose its lustre. Even the highest quality jewellery is not immune to tarnish. The good news is that colour-changing is reversible. This is how you can bring the sparkle back to your favourite pieces.

Pay attention to how you store your jewellery

Never keep your silver jewellery in the bathroom or wear it in a spa or hot tub because humidity accelerates the tarnishing process. The best way to store your precious items is a special jewellery box made of soft material, with each piece placed in an air-tight plastic bag with a mini-ziplock

Wear your jewellery frequently

Did you notice how the silver ring you wear all the time is amazingly tarnish-free? One of the easiest ways to prevent the darkening of your precious items is to wear them as often as possible.

Gently wipe them down after you dismantle your look, and the sparkle will last longer.

When your treasure starts to look a little tired, try this quick and easy DIY. Mix warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap and soak your pieces for up to five minutes. Use a soft sponge to gently rub the silver surface and clean off any stains. Rinse under cool water and wipe with a microfiber cloth. This method won’t help you get rid of tarnish but will make your beauties shinier.

Thankfully, there are a lot of professional products for quick and effective jewellery cleaning. You can try out one of the creams, foams, baths, and gels that can be easily purchased online. Hagerty Silver CleanGoddard’s Foam Tarnish Remover, and Connoisseurs Jewellery Cleaning Wipes come with great reviews.

But if you want to avoid extra purchases, excessive chemicals, or need your jewellery cleaned as soon as possible, this minimalist method is best for you. Use it for silver jewellery without any precious or semiprecious stones.

  • Grab some baking soda and aluminium foil
  • Pick a bowl that can fit all the pieces and line the inside of it with a sheet of foil with the reflective side facing up
  • Place the jewellery inside the foil-lined bowl and add some hot water to it until the jewellery is covered
  • Sprinkle some baking soda in the bowl of boiling water in a ratio of one tablespoon per cup of water and let the precious items soak in the solution for a few minutes

Remove the jewellery, rinse it under cool water, and dry it with a microfiber cloth. Your pieces will dazzle.
